Breast Lift

The effects of aging, pregnancy, lactation, and weight fluctuations can cause a woman’s breasts to sag. To restore a more firm and youthful appearance to a woman’s breasts, our experienced plastic surgeon offers advanced breast lift surgery (mastopexy). A breast lift involves the removal of skin around the nipple and under the breast, ensuring minimal surgical scarring. At our practice in Annapolis, Maryland, a breast lift is sometimes performed in conjunction with breast augmentation or breast reduction. If you would like a breast lift, contact Annapolis Aesthetic Surgery, Inc. today. Arrangements can be made for you to stay locally during your recovery if you do not live in the area.

Breast Lift Candidates

Women considering this procedure are often discouraged by the current appearance of their breasts. This may be due to loose, sagging, or excess skin and/or a lower position of the nipple and areola. Although common as the body begins to age, these changes can also be a result of:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Sun exposure
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding

A breast lift may be right for you if you wish to restore a pre-pregnancy figure or raise your breasts to more youthful chest position. Areola size can also be reduced. If you would like to increase your cup size and have excess skin removed, a breast lift with implants may be a good choice. During your private consultation, Dr. Ormsby will evaluate your needs and discuss your personal goals. Based on this information, she will customize a treatment plan for your desired outcome.

Breast Lift Procedure

Patients are typically placed under general anesthesia for breast lift surgery. Depending on your treatment plan, the procedure usually takes two to three hours. Dr. Ormsby will remove excess skin and tighten the remaining skin, lifting the breasts to a higher, more youthful position. Additional time in our recovery room will be necessary before you can return home. We recommend patients have someone with them the day of surgery to help comfort them when they wake up and drive them home, as they may feel groggy as the anesthesia wears off.

Breast Lift Recovery and Results

Most patients experience temporary swelling and bruising after their breast lift. The full recovery time from breast lift surgery will vary slightly, particularly if the procedure is combined with another option, such as in a mommy makeover. An oral pain medication may be prescribed to help alleviate discomfort. Dr. Ormsby will also advise on how to maintain personal hygiene without compromising your bandages. If you can wear a comfortable support bra during recovery, this may help promote blood flow and aid in the healing process. We recommend our patients schedule a few days to a week off from work to recover. Patients should also avoid strenuous exercise for at least three weeks..

Breast Lift FAQs

Will I have scars?

As with any surgical procedure, you will notice some scarring. However, Dr. Ormsby will work diligently to ensure any residual scarring is as light as possible. The use of anti-scar creams can be helpful, but other factors such as skin color, genetics, age, health, activity level, and the use of tobacco can also play a role in how well the scars fade.

Will I lose sensation in my nipples?

Following a mastopexy, there is the possibility that some feeling may be lost in your nipples. Dr. Ormsby is extensively trained and experienced with breast enhancement procedures and will do everything possible to minimize the chance of permanent sensation loss. It is rare for patients to lose all feeling in this area.

Will my breast lift results be permanent?

Although breast lift surgery can restore the breasts to a more youthful position, the procedure cannot stop the natural aging process. The areas between the nipples and lower folds of the breasts are regions that are often susceptible to losing elasticity over time. With that in mind, the nipples most often will not descend as far as they did before the procedure.
