Breast Augmentation

Some women feel self-conscious about their breast size and would like to enhance their bustline. Offered at our cosmetic surgery office, breast augmentation can help enhance the feminine figure by making a woman’s breasts more shapely and proportional. During the breast enlargement procedure, saline or silicone implants are placed behind the chest wall muscle through a discreet incision around the areola. The saline or silicone breast implants are placed behind the chest wall to allow for a softer, more natural breast contour and to maintain full nipple sensation after breast enlargement. Our practice has performed many breast augmentation surgeries. Because of our expertise in the procedure, post-operative scarring is minimal. If you live in or around Annapolis, Maryland and are considering breast enlargement, contact us today. Arrangements can be made for you to stay locally during your recovery if you do not live nearby.

Breast Augmentation Candidates

Patients at Annapolis Aesthetic Surgery often choose breast augmentation to increase the size of their breasts and to enhance their body contours. Breast augmentation is performed by our Annapolis plastic surgeon, Dr. Marcia V. Ormsby, and can provide a range of benefits:

  • Fuller, more shapely breasts
  • Improved symmetry between the breasts
  • Restored breast volume lost after pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Increased self-confidence

Patients who desire saline implants must be 18 years or older, while those who prefer silicone implants must be at least 22. Ideal candidates should be in reasonably good health and have realistic expectations. In a private consultation, you can discuss your goals with Dr. Ormsby, during which time she will help you determine if the procedure is right for you.

Breast Augmentation Procedure

To prepare for breast augmentation, we recommend patients who use tobacco products stop a minimum of two weeks before surgery. Some medications should also be avoided (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen) before the procedure to limit excessive bleeding.

Breast augmentation is typically performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Dr. Ormsby will conduct the procedure utilizing the pre-discussed techniques and treatment plan. After making a small incision around the areola, Dr. Ormsby usually places the implant behind the chest muscle as she believes this yields a more natural-looking result.

Breast Augmentation Recovery and Results

Recovering from your procedure typically takes five to seven days. Some discomfort may develop as the soft tissues around your breasts stretch to accommodate the implant, but any potential pain can be managed with a prescription from Dr. Ormsby. Muscle soreness may feel similar to how your body feels after a workout, so it is important to take the time needed to fully recover. Taking one to two weeks off work to rest may be needed. Avoiding intense exercise for six to eight weeks is recommended.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

Should I have a breast augmentation before pregnancy?

Women can have breast augmentation before or after pregnancy. Complications with breastfeeding should not occur from breast implants, though some women are not naturally able to breastfeed. If you plan to have children in the future, Dr. Ormsby can talk with you about surgical techniques designed to minimize the risk of affecting your ability to breastfeed.

Do I need breast augmentation or breast lift surgery?

If a patient wishes to increase their breast volume or improve their contour, augmentation can help. However, this procedure is not designed to tighten loose skin or elevate sagging breast tissue. A breast lift may be better for patients who wish to elevate sagging breasts. Although not intended to add volume, a lift creates a more youthful look by lifting the breasts to a perkier position. If you want to reduce sagginess and add volume, a combination breast lift with implants may be ideal.

How much does breast augmentation cost?

The cost of breast augmentation will vary depending on a number of factors, such as the technique, implant type, surgeon’s fee, anesthesia, and post-surgical medications. Costs and plastic surgery financing options will be reviewed during your consultation.

Will my breast implants “drop”?

For the first few weeks after surgery, your implants may appear high, but as your body continues to heal, the implants should begin to “drop” into a more natural-looking position. In some cases, one implant may drop before the other. Over time, both implants should settle to a natural-looking, even level as your final results begin to take shape.
