Otoplasty to Reduce the Appearance of Prominent Ears

Otoplasty (ear pinning surgery) can be an effective solution for people affected by large, protruding ears. Prominent ears can be a source of extreme self-consciousness from the early days of childhood, and can affect your level of self-confidence on into adulthood. Otoplasty is a method of recontouring and reshaping your ears so that they are positioned closer to the head, giving them a smaller appearance. Ear surgery can be performed in adults of any age, and children whose ear cartilage has reached full maturity (typically between ages five and eight).

Traditional otoplasty techniques involve small incisions made on the back of each ear. The ear cartilage is re-sculpted and then positioned back toward the head. The entire procedure usually takes less than two hours to complete on an outpatient basis.

Surgery for the Earlobe

Earlobes can often change shape and take on a much different form as the result of piercings and the natural effects of aging. A number of earlobe surgery techniques can be performed to reconstruct the earlobe with significantly improved results. Dr. Marcia Ormsby can perform earlobe surgery for:

The Aged Earlobe

As we age, our earlobes can start to change in appearance, becoming atrophied and elongated. A relatively simple earlobe surgery procedure can address this by removing excess skin and recontouring the earlobe. The treatment can be completed with local anesthesia as an outpatient.

Dr. Ormsby can also improve the appearance of ears that look thinned out. Injectable treatments such as Radiesse™ can add volume and improved contour to the earlobes.

The Torn Earlobe

Many people who have worn heavy earrings over a period of many years, as well as those who have had their earrings yanked or pulled, experience rips and even complete tears through the earlobes. Dr. Ormsby can correct these issues with surgical earlobe repair to the damaged areas. The procedure can be performed as an outpatient under local anesthesia.

Earlobe Deformity from Gauges

Gauges require the earlobes to be stretched out and elongated, significantly altering the size and shape of the lower ear. Once the gauge is removed, a large hole is left with a dramatically thinned out earlobe. Earlobe repair from damage by gauges is a very meticulous plastic surgery procedure. Dr. Ormsby is a highly skilled plastic surgeon who can restore the earlobes to a more natural appearance after gauge removal. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis.
