Dr. Marica Ormsby In the News

According to the most recent statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the number of facelifts performed in 2010 rose more than 35% from 2009. At Annapolis Aesthetic Surgery, Maryland plastic surgeon Marcia Ormsby, MD says this may be due to the fact that the traditional facelift has become less invasive and more specific, over recent years. She adds that the development of appearance specific procedures, such as the mini facelifts, necklifts, browlifts and the liquid facelift, provide patients of any age with a more subtle option.

The latest study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery shows the number of facelifts performed in the U. S. rose 35% from 2009-2010. Dr. Marcia Ormsby, a plastic surgeon in Maryland, believes the increase in procedures performed is due to an increasingly innovative approach to the traditional facelift, as well as the ongoing pursuit of more subtle, less-invasive procedures such as the mini-facelift or liquid facelift.

Dr. Ormsby says that her facelift surgeries have evolved from pulling back and stretching the skin thirty years ago, to an overall enhancement and filling of “facial wasting” that occurs with aging. She says the cheek prominence in young faces is lost over time and that prominence requires restoration with either one’s own fat or the elevation of the ‘fallen’ tissues, back up to the cheek bone. While Dr. Ormsby says patients will be surprised by the level of rejuvenation achievable with BOTOX injections or dermal fillers, the latest innovations in the facelift procedure provides alternatively effective and discrete options at any age.

Dr. Ormsby also believes the increase in popularity of facial rejuvenation is due to the prevalence of highly innovative, less-invasive, and more subtle procedures that can be tailored to meet the specific needs of any patient. “The very best results are achieved when the surgeon attends to or enhances the problem areas that the patient identifies. So, if the eyelids have always looked tired, the surgery should begin there.”

This patient is a 59 year old, healthy, but overweight female, who was very unhappy with her facial appearance. She thought that, perhaps, her weight would eliminate the possibility for facial surgery, but actually, if in good health, most people heal very well. A few requirements need to be met and the most important relate to your overall health. Diabetes, if present, must be well controlled, and no smokers are permitted in this special group of patients. Facial skin is usually well vascularized, but in the smoker, the blood supply is compromised. This patient is seen six months following her facelift, and even though she was very pleased with her results, went on to gain some twenty pounds. As you can see in her photos, her result is very good, but I must add that without the weight gain, would have been even better.

Facelift Surgery Patient Results – 6 Months Post Op

Face lifting is a safe, predictable procedure

Given expert technique and meticulous attention to detail, the face lifting surgery is an artful restructuring of the facial form, beneath the skin. Following support of the underlying structures, and filling of the defects, the skin is draped without tension or distortion. This application of very individual correction of facial aging renders a longevity and naturalness to the final result. My patients appreciate some 15 to 20 years of superb results before touch-ups may be needed.
