Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Performed at our Annapolis, Maryland office, an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is an ideal procedure to shed excess fat and skin around the waistline that exercise and a healthy diet cannot eliminate. Often performed in conjunction with liposuction, an abdominoplasty results in a tighter, flatter, firmer abdomen and a slimmer waistline. In many cases, a patient’s posture is improved following a tummy tuck and any lower back pain is either greatly reduced or vanishes completely. If you are interested in abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), contact us today. Arrangements can be made for you to stay locally during your recovery.
Surgery on the abdomen can take on several forms depending upon the extent of skin, muscle weakness, and fatty excesses, but the female abdomen is particularly problematic due to the storage of fat for gestation and lactation. When a woman reaches the age well above childbearing, the abdomen is in the direct line of cosmetic focus and aesthetic concern. If the problematic abdomen is strictly limited to the area below the belly button (umbilicus), then a mini-abdominoplasty is sufficient to correct the problem and no skin is removed or changed from the upper abdomen. Usually, a standard abdominoplasty is needed, which modifies the fat, the skin, and the muscle above and below the belly button. But if the problem extends all around to the back, then the incision must be extended to the back as well, rendering the completion of an extended abdominoplasty. Whichever surgery is needed, you will be properly informed as to the extent and timing of your recovery, which is generally limited to one to three weeks maximum. Our plastic surgeon, Dr. Marcia Ormsby, will visit your home the day after your surgery to check on your recovery and examine all the areas in which you have had surgery. Your positioning and your fluid status are checked to ensure you are not at risk for dehydration. You will receive meticulous care and attention before, during, and for at least a year after your surgery.
*Individual Results May Vary
Dr. Ormsby would like to assure you that this surgery is one that does not ever need to be repeated, provided a reasonable diet and exercise routine are maintained. The rectus muscle which is intended to support the anterior surface of your abdomen, has stretched and lost its ability to maintain a flat abdominal contour. No amount of sit-ups or push-ups, lunges or core exercises will fix this muscle or change your contours. This rectus separation is a surgical problem, and if left for years, may eventually lead to a herniation, or tear in the mid-portion of the muscle separation (also called a diastasis).
Usually, your health insurance will not cover your surgical expenses, but if a hernia is diagnosed and repaired, that portion of your surgery may be covered from your medical insurance plan. The addition of hernia repair, while usually an insurance-covered procedure, will not in any way negatively effect your outcome. The time in the operating room, recovery, and cosmetic outcome is exactly the same whether a hernia repair is needed or not. You will be provided with a surgical garment much like an industrial strength girdle. This garment is not touched for 5 days, post-operatively, but remains intact until your first return to the office. You are then given another garment, exchanged for your original garment, which you will launder at home and rotate daily with a clean one. There are always unexpected questions that arise during your recovery; Dr. Ormsby is available day and night to answer your concerns and to examine you should you be requiring special attention. Of course a fever, unusual swelling, extreme pain, calf pain with swelling, are all occurrences that will require extra visits and even possible hospitalization. Usually, however, your recovery is uninterrupted by untoward events, and leads to a smooth, beautifully shaped body for many decades.
It is most appropriate to add that when you are recovered, you will be enjoying a remarkably beautified body; Dr. Ormsby will give you specific direction with exercises, diet, and activities to help maintain your figure. You will enjoy many benefits from your new body, one of which will assist in supporting your lower back, thereby reducing the misalignment that results in nagging lumbar discomfort. While not all back pain will be alleviated, much of it will be expected to lessen, due to the new support given to your abdomen. You will have an amazing ability to perform sit-ups, leg-lifts, lunges, and core exercises now that your abdominal musculature is aligned. Many ask if their body will return to its original, pre-operative problems. While there are no guarantees, the correction of these problems should remain corrected for those who continue a reasonable diet and fitness routine. The abdominoplasty surgery is one for which many patients have remarked, “for these results, I wish I had thought of it sooner!”
